A Charming, Ventura Beach Hotel for Unforgettable Getaways

The One Key Chicago Athletic Association has had an illustrious and sometimes sordid history that dates back to 1893, when it wasn’t quite a hotel. A lot has changed since then, but the ghosts of the past are never far away. For all its successes, The Cliff House at Pikes Peak also endured some hard times and disasters. In 1921, a flash flood roared down Williams Canyon and washed through the hotel’s Grill Room, a small sandwich and soda shop in the rear of the East wing, destroying all the hymn books and buckling the floor all the way to the ceiling. This last photo isn’t technically historical — it’s one I took on Velvia 50 film when I dined at the restaurant in 2018.

This time, she had it built using fireproof steel-reinforced concrete. The third cliff house was built in a neoclassical style, and opened in 1909. Our individually decorated Celebrity Suites celebrate the legend and lore of some of our most famous past guests. All have queen beds, sitting areas with gas fireplaces, heated towel racks and either a two-person spa tub or steam shower with body sprays. Most of the tenants at The Cliff will open onto an outdoor communal space — what Neiger called a “central interaction district” — that includes a bar, alfresco dining, and rotating food and drink kiosks. Now a new owner of the Laguna Beach cliff house will be able to enjoy the views out to Catalina Island plus the pristine and private beach below.

The rest of the crew has remained a mystery, and the ultra-private Struyck has laid low, supposedly staying with family near San Diego. Fake pages on the delivery platforms direct orders to other restaurants. Acclaimed chef James Trees called out one of the pages in an online post. One of the bars lies in a sleek Strip hotel, the other off Strip in a longtime locals favorite.

So important was this installation on Bald Head Cliff that the Weare Family was barred from their own land. Anecdotal stories claim that in 1858 Samuel Brannan paid $1,500 for lumber salvaged from a ship that foundered on the rocky shore's basalt cliffs near Seal Rocks[5] and built the first Cliff House. While Brannan may have constructed a building there, no historical evidence of this building exists and its role in the origin of the Cliff House remains apocryphal.[6]The Cliff House was built by Senator John Buckley and C. C. Butler, opened in 1863 and leased to Captain Junius G. Foster.[7][8][9] It was a long trek on foot from the city and the restaurant hosted mostly horseback riders, small-game hunters or picnickers on day outings. With the opening of the privately built Point Lobos toll road a year later, the Cliff House became a Sunday destination among the carriage trade. Later the builders of the toll road constructed a two-mile speedway adjacent to it where well-to-do San Franciscans raced their horses along the way.

The Cliff House Inn is also proud to host a restaurant recently voted as one of the most Romantic dining locales in the area, adding to the allure of this coastal retreat. From sun-drenched terraces and private balconies, it is possible to see Ardmore’s golden sands, lobster pots and dolphins that play out on the water. All our luxury hotel rooms and suites are sea-facing while many are interconnected to provide family-friendly configurations.

There was a gift shop in the building, and the historic camera obscura is on a deck overlooking the ocean. Peanut Wagon continued to manage Cliff House operations and worked with the Park Service during the extensive site restoration that was completed in 2004. California’s smallest national park service outlet covers a mere half-acre in Concord on San Francisco Bay’s east shore—but it tells a very big...

The Sutro Baths

These stories are woven into the fabric of The Cliff House at Pikes Peak. 04 Adventure Is Your Middle Name - From rock climbing and rafting to mountain biking and hot air ballooning, our concierge can arrange a thrilling day of adventure in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

You can see the iconic veranda above Seal Rock, and diners with white tablecloths through the window. The National Parks Service bought the building in 1977 and leased it to operators who managed the day-to-day of the restaurant. Check out the Camera Obscura behind the restaurant (which is still there today), and the proud sign reading “Since 1858” (technically that’s when the land for the restaurant was purchased). For decades the restaurant operated as an elegant fine-dining establishment. But World War 1 and the Great Depression had a major impact, the NPS says, and in 1937 Sutro’s family sold the restaurant to other operators, who continued to run it from the 1940s to the 1970s. Here’s an actual photograph of the restaurant in 1873, from the New York Public Library.

The bill is widely expected to pass the Senate in the coming days, as it generally mirrors a $95.3 billion national security bill passed by the upper chamber in February. Per Rutgers Wire, Omoruyi has visited Georgetown, Kansas State, and Alabama. Offensively, Omoruyi does the vast majority of his damage in the paint, attempting 84% of his total shots at the rim per Pivot Analysis. While his hands were an area of concern in high school, they’ve made moderate gains in the last four years. He’s still a lob threat and a big target rolling off a screen or rim-running.

Even the earliest guests, mostly trappers and hunters on their way to or from Colorado Springs, were drawn to the inviting parlors and rambling porches. When the mines in Leadville proved bountiful, many rich capitalists made their way through Manitou Springs, bringing more business to the small inn. There were times when tents had to be pitched next to the building to accommodate the overflow of guests. Each of its 226 inviting luxury accommodations—including guest rooms and suites—boast private terraces and incomparable oceanfront views. Custom-designed with graceful coastal style and handcrafted elements, our serene Maine accommodations are richly textured yet comfortably refined.

“COVID created a huge amount of vacant office space on the market. Between office vacancies and other types of vacancies created by that evolution, there all kinds of opportunities like this. People are going to become more creative with older buildings,” he said. On the food front, that might mean a farmers market, or a chef from elsewhere in Vegas presenting a pop-up, or one of the in-house restaurants offering monthly dishes beyond its regular menu. He also told me Crown Point and this home have been painted by many an artist over the decades.
